Golf Widow – A Throwback Thursday Re-Post

#TBT – Originally published on June 11, 2016

Almost a year after I first posted this, the obsession has only taken greater hold. Tony is back at it in full force, so I thought this might make a timely repost for those in the midst of their golf obsession (like him) or those sitting on the sidelines (like me). I just don’t get how anyone can want to golf that much!

Golfer at sunset

This past weekend, more than any other, I realized that my husband is obsessed with golf. His commitment had reached an all-time high, golfing every day from Thursday on, and some days he golfed multiple times. When Tony first started his tax business; I would call myself a tax widow from about January to April when he’d disappear into an abyss of tax returns. But now his business is well established and in turn he is obsessed with golf from about May to September.

Tony hasn’t always been a big golfer; only in recent years has the bug hit him hard. I don’t mind really. The truth is; summer is a slower time in the world of taxes which translates to him working more from home. This is okay, but after a while I start to feel – how can I say this nicely – irritated. Hmm, that wasn’t the nice word I was looking for, but regardless – I like to have the house to myself. Fortunately for me, golf has become Tony’s new “office” which gives us just the separation we need to keep a happy marriage going.

While Tony’s romance with golf suits me just fine, I can’t help but wonder what the attraction is. This pastime, beloved by so many, strikes me as frustrating and inconsistent at best. There are days Tony will be on cloud nine talking about the great game he had. The next day he’s glum and befuddled by his subpar performance. It seems no matter the time and dedication practicing form, swing and strategy; there is just no way to predict a good day from bad. This would drive me insane. In fact, it has driven me insane. Just last year, I wrote about my attempt to finally give golf a try. I did it and, not surprisingly, I didn’t like it.

I was doing what the instructor told me, but the ball wouldn’t go where I wanted it to. It was incredibly annoying and week after week, I saw no real progress. I thought; why in the world would I put so much time and energy into something I’m clearly not good at? I just didn’t get it and came to the conclusion that with golf; you either have it or you don’t. I most definitely don’t!

But as I continue to watch Tony and many friends enjoy this sport, sometimes in sweltering heat or pouring rain, I ask myself – what am I missing? How are they so obsessed with golf when I can’t even endure the agony of mini-golf?

As Tony prepares today for yet another busy day at “the office,” he tells me that it’s the challenge, both mental and physical, that keeps him going back round after round.

Ahhh yes –  the chase!

Are you a golfer? What do you love about the sport?

My Doggie Dilemma – To Stroll or Not to Stroll?

OK, I know I’ve gone legit crazy, but hear me out. This may not be as insane as it initially sounds.

If you’ve been with me for a while, you know I’m obsessed with my dog. Lately, I’ve been contemplating a doggie stroller. Before you say I’ve lost my mind, let me explain. Oscar is eleven years old, he’s diabetic and, worst of all, he’s lazy. He walks every day, except when he doesn’t feel like it. I don’t push him to go because 1) I worry too much about him and 2) he’s stubborn as all get out. At 30 lbs, the only way to get him to go someplace when he doesn’t want to is to carry him. That’s just not happening.

The thing is, we have a great daily routine. Every morning we meet up with other neighborhood dogs in an area just half a mile from home. The dogs run off-leash, sniff at their leisure and become one with nature. It’s awesome – Oscar loves it and so do I. When he doesn’t want to walk, I either don’t go or, I drive him to meet up with his furry friends.

This has worked out pretty well until recently when I started using a Fitbit. Every time Oscar skipped his walk, I realized I was missing out on precious steps.

Enter my great idea…a doggie stroller. It’s perfect!, I explained to my dog walking pals. I still get my steps and Oscar gets to our doggie park destination without trudging around the neighborhood attached to that dastardly leash.  Once the laughter ceased, my friends surmised that Oscar would either hate it or he’d never walk again.

Truthfully, I’m pretty sure he’d love it (he’s such a prince), but I agree that his motivation to move might wane even more if he knows there’s a chariot awaiting. I know his walks are good for him and I don’t want to risk losing them.

So, what do you think? Is a doggie stroller a bad idea?

One last plug for the doggie stroller – Oscar is as heat resistant as a snowman. He never walks in temperatures above 75 degrees. The stroller would be a nice summer option to get him out and about to meet up with his friends.

College in New York City? Not for My Kid, or So I thought.

Grand Central Station – New York, New York!!!

Never did I imagine my oldest daughter would want to tour colleges in New York City. She is only a sophomore in high school, but she is already dreaming about life in the big city. I can’t say that I blame her. I too am dreaming of moving to the city, but I’m talking Boston. Boston is exactly where I imagined Julia would end up for college. Just forty-five minutes from home and she’d get the benefit of a beautiful, busy city. But not so far that I couldn’t be there in the blink of an eye if she needed me. Perfect, right?

Colleges in New York City

Apparently, not so perfect for her. Over April break, we agreed to take Julia to her dream place, Manhattan, to tour a few of the colleges in New York City. I’m not going to lie, I had a devious plan all worked out in my mind. The end result of which would be her hating New York City. I imagined subtly pointing out the heaps of garbage on the streets, the stinky smell that hung in the air from said garbage and that strange stench wafting up from the subway. I assumed the horribly congested sidewalks would frustrate her and the outrageously overpriced everything would make her think twice about the fantasy of NYC she’d concocted in her mind. The real NYC isn’t like what you see on television, I told her.

I was sure that once there, she’d be turned off from college life in Manhattan. But she wasn’t – not even a little.

NYC in full bloom  – I saw more tulips than trash on our visit. Truthfully, the city looked beautiful.

We spent just a few days in NYC, one of which was completely rainy, and had a wonderful time. The city was indeed electric and energizing.

Columbia and New York University (NYU)

We made it to two of our intended college destinations. We shot high and started with Columbia and NYU.

Columbia University Library

Julia fell in love with NYU. It happened to be accepted student day on the day we made our way through Washington Square Park and into the heart of the NYU campus. The area was abuzz with lively college students.

Washington Square Park

I can only say that the experience was lovely and not nearly as overwhelming as I imagined it to be. While NYU did not have a traditional campus feel like Columbia, it was very contained and felt connected.

Bleecker Street

We spoke to several NYU students who were friendly and the entire area had a great college vibe. The scene was youthful, exciting and a pleasure to partake. Our stroll down Bleecker St. sealed the deal for Julia. The eclectic and collegey mix of restaurants, coffee shops, bars and boutiques were cool even by my seemingly uncool standards, accordingly to my girls.

I couldn’t deny that I could see Julia living in Greenwich Village and fitting perfectly into the NYU scene.

Yes to New York City

Our quick trip to NYC was eye-opening and made me realize that colleges in New York City aren’t quite as scary and intimidating as I imagined they’d be. For Julia’s sake, I’m glad we took this trip and we both came away with a good feeling about the possibilities of NYC. I don’t want to hold her back, but if she chooses to make her NYC dream a reality, letting her go will be the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.

WOW Conference – Winning Opportunities for Women

FullSizeRender 4

I’m not much of a conference person. I used to attend loads of them when I worked in the financial services industry. I always found them epically long.  The last conference I attended, before WOW, was a three-day writer’s conference in Boston.  At that time, I was in the trenches of writing Musing Mediterranean. That conference offered so much value in its workshops and sessions, yet I walked away from it thinking never again! Like I said, I’m not a conference person.

Until a couple of weeks ago when I attended the 21st Annual WOW Conference put on by the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce. I didn’t know what to expect, but my friend and fashion stylist Lysa Pelletier-Gibbs was presenting. She asked me if I wanted to go. I love supporting my friends whenever possible, so I went.   Lysa is also one of the funniest people I know, so I knew it would be entertaining.

The 8am-3pm agenda was full of valuable information ideal for women in business, aspiring entrepreneurs or attendees simply interested in hearing the WOW Conference Featured Speakers.

WOW Conference Speakers

  • Gina Barreca – author, humorist and Professor of Feminist Theory. Gina was funny and thought-provoking.
  • Susan Leger Ferraro – Founder/CEO of Imajine That and G3. Susan’s honesty and ability to overcome difficult challenges was compelling.
  • Becca Pizzi – 2016 Winner of the World Marathon Challenge. She completed 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days…incredible!!!
  • Cheryl Fiandaca – WBZ-TV Chief Investigative Reporter. I was so inspired by Cheryl that I approached her to thank her for her encouraging words. She was lovely and her message reminded me to never give up.

Each speaker who took the stage was impressive and held my interest with every word. Honestly, that’s not easy to do. In between speakers, Lysa had the floor and offered fantastic style tips. Her signature red lips and hilarious brand of humor were the perfect way to add a bit of flavor to the day’s events.

I walked away from the WOW Conference with a renewed sense of purpose. I expressed to Lysa how glad I was that I’d attended and would most certainly go again. Kudos to the organizers for putting together a unique line-up of women who undoubtedly made a lasting impression on every person in the room.

Lysa brought these women up on stage to talk about their fashion dos. Fun!

As far as being a conference person – maybe I’m one after all. It just depends on the conference.

As we head into the weekend – have a great one. Please share my blog with your friends and if you don’t already subscribe, please do!
