Jill Romano – Stylist Extraordinaire

When you’re sick of the mall and online shopping seems only to result in returns, try a unique, more personalized, shopping experience. My friend, Jill, became an independent fashion consultant for the ETCETERA clothing line in 2015. At the time, I had never experienced a home-based fashion business. I had heard about clothing shopping parties, but ETCETERA was very different. Jill was setting up a private boutique in her home, four times a year for each season. To browse the collection, you book a one hour appointment at which time you have the shop and Jill’s attention all to yourself.

Time to Shop

At my first appointment, I was impressed with the collection’s range of looks going from jeans, sweaters and simple tees to gorgeous dresses, business attire and jackets. I liked that I wasn’t distracted by a party atmosphere and could focus on the clothing. Jill was helpful, but not pushy. I love her–not just because she’s a fellow curly girl, but because her California-born energy is always so positive and fun to be around. She helped me find casual items that suit my style and while the ticket price was higher than I would normally spend, I was open to trying something new. I soon learned that these investment pieces were well worth the money.

Yes, they were high quality, timeless items, but the real payoff came when I realized that every single time I wore ETCETERA clothing , I got compliments in droves. What’s more – I found myself admiring the tops, dresses and sweaters of my friends only to learn they, too, came from Jill. No joke, it just happened last night! There is something eye-catching about the ETCETERA style that really speaks to me and keeps me wanting more.

Personalized Service

The personalized service that Jill offers is another major benefit of this line. Not only does she help style and fit you, but she can even tell you if something you have your eye on has been purchased by someone else in your area. In the featured photo (thank you Linda Holt Interiors, for all of your fabulous photography), I’m wearing a scuba, digital print dress that I fell in love with and planned to wear to a local event. Jill was able to tell me that no one else nearby had purchased the dress. I was thrilled and that dress has become a dressy night go-to that gets comments every time I wear it. At a recent Bat Mitzvah, the husband of a woman I didn’t know asked where I got it because his wife liked it so much. I was flattered!

Jill and I both wear our scuba, digital print dresses. The thicker, flexible fabric of the scuba style dress is so comfortable and flattering.

ETCETERA clothing has allowed me to find some truly stand-out pieces. It’s also a great line for the busy woman who prefers to shop in an intimate setting with professional guidance regarding style, fit and comfort.

Simple Solutions to Silly Problems

Sometimes I get stuck with silly problems that aren’t a big deal to resolve. I just don’t give them any energy because well, like I said, they’re silly.

Usually, these hang-ups of mine have really simple solutions. When I finally get around to acting on them, I feel pretty darned satisfied.

Here are a couple that have me feeling happy with myself.

Problem #1

Just a reminder – I said silly!

Every fall, in preparation for cold and flu season, I like to reintroduce a daily vitamin into the family routine. I buy jumbo, cumbersome bottles of gummies of varying types. Plain C for scratchy throat days, multis for any family member’s consumption and women’s just for me, because the bottle said they help with metabolism and energy – yes please!

The daily part was the problem. We kept forgetting to take our supplements because I kept the bottles hidden in a kitchen cabinet. Sure, I could leave them on the counter, but I don’t like the way those clunky bottles look hanging around in plain view.

Solution

Why it never occurred to me before I do not know, but finally I realized if I just transfer the fun little gummies into more “counter-friendly” containers then the out-of-sight-out-of-mind problem disappears. Three inexpensive mason jars later, and maybe three minutes of my time, our vitamins are now sitting pretty right where we can see them. Finally, our daily vitamins are taken daily.

Problem #2

Another of my simple solutions came to me over the summer when I found my collection of flimsy flip-flops strewn all over my closet. It was a mess and I could never find a matching pair.

A $15 Fix

Finally, my unusable closet real estate is put to use. On an angled portion of the closet ceiling, that served no purpose whatsoever, I secured three, $5 plastic shoe bags! Voilà– a flip-flop fiesta.

I love cost-effective simple solutions to everyday problems.

Do you have any quick and easy fixes that you love?

Time to Hang Up the Gloves-Goodbye Kickboxing Classes

gloves for kickboxing classes

My kickboxing gloves may have seen their last punch. While I am sad to see them go, I just recently realized that the activity I love is causing me more harm than good.

I have been enjoying kickboxing for about five years, maybe more. I like cardio-kickboxing and kickboxing with bags. Both give me a physical workout like no other. Not to mention, the mental workout is addictive. Through the years I have worked out so many frustrations in my kickboxing classes that it seemed more like therapy than exercise. Whether I was punching air or slamming a bag, I loved visualizing the target in my mind.

Every class made me feel good. In the moment, I’d get a killer workout and afterwards I enjoyed the mental clarity that comes from a good sweat.  Recently, however, my lifelong back issues seem to be exacerbated by my beloved kickboxing classes. The biggest problem is that, while I’m in class, I feel great. The adrenalin is pumping, I’m in the zone and I feel strong and powerful.

But now, I’m the one feeling beaten down for days, sometimes weeks, following my classes. I only realized that my kickboxing classes were the problem when my loved ones called my attention to it. Because I never felt pain during class, it never occurred to me that the kickboxing classes were, in fact, the problem.

When I gave up running because of my back, I knew without question that running itself was the source of my pain. Somehow, I just never made the connection to my kickboxing classes which now leaves me with the difficult choice to give up an activity that I really enjoy.

The reality is, I don’t see any way around it. I’m getting older and my body just can’t do the things it used to. So sadly, I must say goodbye to my boxing gloves. Kickboxing, along with running, jumping rope and jumping jacks, must be a thing of my past in favor of lower impact activities that won’t leave me quite so broken.

Alas, getting older is tough, but after just one week free of kickboxing I already feel relief.

“Don’t be afraid of change. You might lose something good, but you’ll gain something better.”

The Death of Brick and Mortar Retail – Amazon is Winning

shipping boxes on front doorstep

In Store vs. Online

Lately my front door has looked the way it does in the photo. While typically a stack of deliveries on my doorstep makes me giddy, today I’m simply frustrated.

Everything in those boxes was first shopped at a traditional brick and mortar retail store (I’ll leave names out of it – no need to make matters worse). The problem is, every time I drag myself to said stores, I walk away empty handed and disappointed. I’m an immediate satisfaction kind of gal. When I attempt and fail to pick up an item I’d hoped to get my hands on right away, all I think is – I should’ve just ordered this online? Both the problem and the solution.

Issues

While brick and mortar retail stores know that they are getting killed, they seem not to know what to do about it. Things like…have stuff available for customers to buy or employ reasonably qualified sales people who remotely understand the concept of customer service might be good places to start.

Sometimes, when I enter a store I get an eerie feeling like…am I alone in here? And sales staff, if I can find them, poke around in zombie-like states with no real desire to sell.

If you are looking for something specific, you might as well forget it. Recently, I decided to spruce up a couple of rooms in my house. I hit a few home stores to see, touch and measure my items of interest and…pointless, every time! Everything I went to see was either out of stock or no longer available. Sales staff avoided eye contact and offered lame attempts to order the items and have them shipped. Um, isn’t that online ordering – I could’ve done that from home. God, I hate wasting my time.

The sales staff were never rude, but each and every time they were clueless like it was their first day. Annoying, frustrating and indicative of positions that will soon be extinct if brick and mortar retail stores don’t get their acts together.

Amazon

To add insult to injury, the influx of online customers frequently results in items that are persistently backordered. I just ordered a tiny little table online, that I could not find anywhere in a store, only to later be alerted that it was backordered until January 2018. Come on!!!! Truth be told, I find myself frequently resorting to Amazon because they have what I need, it is rarely backordered and it arrives relatively quickly. But, it’s just not the same.

At this rate, my little room makeover is going to take a year to pull together.

I know this topic has been discussed many times over with mixed reviews and potential outcomes. Here’s an article from Business Insider featuring Warren Buffet. In the linked article Buffett says, retail is “too tough an investment, especially in the age of Amazon.”

Ugh!

This makes me sad because, well, I like to shop. I hope brick and mortar stores figure this out. Meanwhile, I just got a notification that my latest Amazon order has shipped.

Let There Be Peace on Earth – Please!

Grant Us Peace

Peace symbols

I often struggle to post my light-hearted blog when so many more serious matters are happening in this world. The purpose of this blog has always been to get away from the heavy topics we are so inundated with on the news and social media. 3 Olives & a Twist is about easy reading, comic relief and pleasant content.

It will continue to be that way, but for today’s post I want to pause and recognize the significance that was yesterday. September 11th came and went so quickly. Meanwhile hurricanes Harvey, Irma and now Jose continue to make headlines.

Mother Nature is angry and it’s freaking me out.

Today I simply want to take a moment to recognize those who have suffered through these tragic events. I wish them, and everyone of us, peace.

Our world could really use some right about now.
